Atomic Structure, Periodicity And Chemical Bonding GCE Revision Questions Chemistry
1. Solid substances are made up of crystal lattices that that can be described as Giant ionic, Giant metallic or Giant molecular. Using suitable examples,
(a) Draw diagrams to show these crystal structures.
(b) State two characteristics of Each of them.
(c) Name the forces holding the particles together in each crystal.
2. Chemical substances are held together by three types of chemical bonds which are known as 'covalent' 'ionic' and 'metallic'.
(a) Chose a substance in each case whose atoms are held together by one of these types of bonds and describe how the bonding occurs.
(b) Give one property of each substance and relate this to the type of binding in the substance.
3. The arrangement of elements on the periodic table emphasizes that certain elements have properties in common. Four such sets of elements are
(A) Alkali metals (B) Halogens (C) Transitional metals (D) Noble gases.
(a) Sketch an outline of the periodic table and indicate on it the positions of these four sets of elements.
(b) For each set (A) to (D), show that the elements of the set are alike by referring to electronic configurations or valencies, a physical property and a chemical property in each case.
4. Describe the type of bonding that exist in
(a) potassium chloride
(b) carbon dioxide
(c) phosphorus oxy chloride
